(5) Take My Hand is an evolving multisensory installation and artistic research touching on the old and persistent impulse to make and use symbols, objects, gestures and rituals invoking protection. Rooted in my intimate and inherited relationship with the Hamsa/Khamsa, the work has grown through relationships with other technologies of protection.

While the project considers protection as intimate and collective, material and spiritual, desired and contradictory, the works do not only reflect on protective practices; they are themselves attempts at protection.

The project approaches protection as relational, shaped through reciprocity, interdependence, care, gesture and attention, and by the ways bodies, objects, materials and places affect and are affected by one another. It asks how protective forms are inherited, carried, transformed, and reactivated, while leaving room for belief, doubt, and uncertainty, and for forms of relation whose effects cannot always be seen, measured, or explained.

The research around (5) Take My Hand began in 2024 through studio work, personal and family research, and a growing awareness of the interdependencies within my inherited relationship with the Hamsa/Khamsa and other protection technologies. During 2025, it expanded through material and sensory experimentation, conversations and both public and intimate encounters with others.

In 2026, the project continued to evolve through its iteration in Held Meanings at Gallery Valve in Oulu and through workshops and exchanges with visitors, bringing new questions about protection, reciprocity, memory, hope and interdependence into the work.

	Nuclear Care Constellation I – Be_ing Many&#38;nbsp;


This tent exists on different levels (some of which I cannot explain, as they are not mine), from a simple cover to a temple dedicated to intergenerational care, and also an open, shifting archive of diasporas, supportive practices, and a place for rest and refuge. 
Life keeps poking every other day at my illusions of control, leaving me soft and tender to soak into a sweet surrender. 
From there, I see a sky made of bedsheets, crossed by the daily movements of your needs and mine. A cotton sky, mute and perpetually host to our skin, fluids, and dreams. I cut a few meters of the sky, dyed it with our favourite tea, and sewed it back together so we could rest in it, look at it while it looked at us, and maybe heal a little, learn, or just be. 
This care constellation is an intergenerational tangle that both traps and embraces me. Even though my location and roles have shifted, I have always existed in this endless yet transitional household. I have carried it with me, mounted and dismounted it many times, decorated it, tried to mend it, ran away from it, sung to it, and written poems from pain to rejoicing. It has given me space so I could have space for others. 
It is a tent with all its sacred and mundane meanings, a place to become one while being many.

	WAROOT"2020 Starts, and my first child is born; shortly after, there is a general lockdown, and medium and high classes are able to work from home. Life happens on a screen. It is the golden age of streaming, from entertainment to seminars, lectures or discussions. I lost track of how many courses, meetings, conferences or workshops I was part of. Climate change, ableism, ageism, racism, sustainability, norm-criticality, indigenous rights, dreams, hopes, and fears, we were trying to learn and fight with our pyjama pants on (or underwear).A sentence was bouncing back and forth in my head. It became the ending of each online discussion: -We are running out of time.-

-This is so interesting people, unfortunately, “we are running out of time.- .. ... (meeting ended)
Maybe it is just my sense of humour, but “Indeed we are”, my mind started replying.
 That was the seed."

The illustration belongs to a wider series of drawings and illustrations created as a visceral response to Kemê's daily frictions as a migrant, neurodivergent artist and mother, trying not to disappear amid caregiving responsibilities and precarious cultural work.
An online meeting frames only part of a life. Beyond the screen, care, work, pain and affection occupy the same room, body and hours. The promise that everything can somehow be managed begins to fray. Humour and exhaustion coexist with the insistence on remaining present, making and taking space.
&#38;nbsp;An earlier presentation at the&#38;nbsp;Disturbing Domestic Peace exhibition in Pasila Urban Art Centre included a rug, children’s toys, unpaid bills, a cookie box and other everyday objects.

	Villi Akka

2014–2023
Villi Akka began with my research into the archetypes of the wild woman and wise woman, and their representations as feminine and non-male figures in tales, oral stories and written traditions. The project became both an act of resistance against the violent systems in which we are embedded and a celebration of the untamed feminine in tension with the biopolitical masculine.

Over time, it grew from independent artistic research and studio work into a multivoiced, open dialogue. Workshops and gatherings brought stories, experiences, symbols, rituals and different understandings of the wild and wise into the work, reshaping Villi Akka into an ambiguous being: wise and cosmic, yet deeply earthy. Through photography, performance, embroidery, textiles, text and participatory encounters, the project explored intuition, instinct, situated and diasporic knowledges, empowering acts and the multiplicity of our identities.

The Calling (2018–2023)
An intertwined part of Villi Akka, The Calling was a series of workshops and gatherings that explored the tales, myths, and stories we grow up with, and how they shape our understanding of ourselves and others. Through collective reflection, critical reading, and artistic exercises, participants questioned inherited narratives and created their own using writing, drawing, movement, sound, and other forms of expression.
The workshops became spaces for sharing, questioning and imagining otherwise, allowing different experiences and interpretations to coexist without requiring a single shared story.
With some participants' agreement, a selection of stories created during the workshops was later made available for visitors to read during the exhibitions. In this way, the stories continued to travel beyond the gatherings in which they were first shared.

“B o n e s” was an initiation rite, a form of mental resurrection, an act of magic, a powerful warning, but also simply a reminder of the multifaceted human condition. “B o n e s” is rooted in one of the symbol-laden rituals still passed down to us through tales, crossing arbitrary boundaries, eras, and geographical locations. However, the act becomes just as deeply personal, as it connects and partly reveals personal experiences of family, death, love, magic, trust, loyalty, and betrayal.

Penas y Dolores (2016) was a ritual aimed at washing away people's pains and sorrows, disguised as a durational participatory performance.

The ritual unfolded through singing, work, fire, water, ashes, and various local, handpicked organic offerings, including plants, paper, and bones, as well as our pains and sorrows.

The action was embedded in the Maagillinen Teatteri festival, drawing on on-site materials and locations.

	In Seeds, I work with symbols and objectual memory: the object as an entity, and memory as something lacking in veracity.I strip the pieces of their context (history) and give them a reliquary or souvenir status by using organic materials -like the "forget me not" flowers or hair- historically linked to the "reminder". But by uniting them to synthetic materials like polyester resin, and their death encapsulates within the egg/seed that they acquire the permanency power beyond my time.They are pieces that by their elaborate craft and symbolic load need some irony or mood for the digestion of their fruits.Finally, I bury these "seeds" so that they can incubate their own history through time -days and seasons-, meantime the only evidence of their existence now is through the ephemeral photographic image.
